Jaisalmer India - The Golden City

Jaisalmer is the most western city of India, but not westernized, instead very traditional, very slowly becoming modern. It was founded by Bhati Rajput “Rawal Jaisal” in the year 1156 A. D. So, it is called Jaisalmer. Yellowish sand stone used to build this city, gives it the name of "Golden City".

Location: Jaisalmer is situated in middle of the Thar Desert of Indian state of Rajasthan.

Best Season to visit: October to March.
How to reach Jaisalmer?
By Air: Reach Jodhpur by air. Well connected with domestic and international airlines.
By Road: The best way to reach Jodhpur, then rest 300 kms journey can be covered by taxis or buses.
By Train: The meter gauge and and broad gauge train is available from jodhpur for reaching Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer is also connected directly to delhi by train. All the facilities are available at Jodhpur.

Tourist Attractions of Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer’s prime attraction is Jaisalmer fort, which houses several Jain temples, palaces and about 15000 people (25% of total population of the city). Jain temples are very marvelous in sculpture and architecture. Three havelis, named Nathamalji ki Haveli, second Salim Singh ki haveli [made by Salim Singh] and third Patwon ki haveli [made by Patwa family] have an excellent tourist attraction.

Government museum, Jaisalmer folklore museum, Desert Culture center & museum and Mehra haveli (museum), these four places exhibit and present all details of Jaisalmer’s attraction. Jain temples of Lodhurva should not be missed.

The best place for marketing and bargaining here is market inside the fort and Manak chowk out side the fort.
Jaisalmer Desert Festival
Popular attraction of Jaisalmer is Government organized three days "Desert Festival" in Jan. /Feb. Colorful craft bazaar, camel races, World famous Kalbelia dances, folk songs, folk music, turban tying contest, Mr. Desert contest are big attractions of these three days. All this takes place on full Moon days. Tourists fully enjoy the late night folk dances and musical vocal programmes.

Accommodation: Fort Rajwadi hotel, Hotel Rawal, Hotel Gorbandh Palace, Hotel Lalgarh Palace are the best hotels here. Budget hotels, lodges and even dharmshala’s (charity homes) are also available to stay here.
